If you are interested in a career in satellite communications, then we are here to provide you with some information about this career so that you can make an informed decision regarding whether or not this is a job for you.

A satellite engineer will provide support in the area of engineering for satellites that orbit the earth and the systems that are on the ground that direct those satellites.  Usually a satellite engineer will need to be trained in aerospace engineering, in mechanical engineering, or in electrical engineering.  In many cases, they will specialize in the systems or the networking of satellite engineering field.  It is necessary for you to have at least a bachelor's degree to obtain this type of job, but many employers will actually require you to have a master's degree instead.

The job of a satellite engineer is to create a program that will direct satellites that orbit the earth and to keep those satellites functioning in the proper manner.  They make command systems for the satellite that will control the activities of the satellite by remote from stations on the ground.  They also will create software that will support the functions of a certain mission.  They have to observe the satellites to make sure there are not problems.  They also have to participate in testing of systems of communication.  They track trends and behavior of the satellites and collect data.  They must sum up their findings in reports.  Many satellite engineers will find their jobs with aerospace companies and defense contractors. 

If this sounds like a field you may be interested in, here is a little more information regarding how to become a satellite engineer.  As stated earlier, most employers of satellite communication employees will require that you have at least a bachelor's degree in the area of mechanical, electrical, or aerospace engineering.  Yet for many positions and for many companies, having a master's degree would be preferred.  Also having experience in this field would be a benefit that could help you find employment faster.  If you have just graduated from school, you may get employed as a junior level engineer of the associate level.  There are also some professional associations that may help you to get networking opportunities and perhaps find a job more easily.

If you are interested in becoming a satellite communication engineer, there are certain skills that you want to make sure that you have first.  You need to be an analytical person who is very detail oriented.  You need to have a really good understanding of the communication systems of satellites, of subsystems of space craft, and an understanding of the systems of ground control.  You need to have really good skills with the computer.  You also need to be able to write software programs.  Having excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential too.  If you are going to be working for contractors of defense, you will likely also have to get security clearance too. 

Now you know a little more about the satellite communications industry.  This field can be an excellent one if you have the qualities described here.  You need to enjoy engineering and you need to also have really good verbal and written communications skills.  Most employers will require you to obtain a bachelor's degree at minimum, but most will require a master's degree.
